Evolution Korea
Until recently the scientific community in Korea has avoided engaging with the creationists in fear that doing so could increase the credibility of the movement. However, silence is no anymore an option.
The STR has been fighting to get rid of textbooks that explain evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestor of birds. This is only one aspect of how the concept of development has evolved.
What is Evolution?
Evolution is a theory of science that explains the changes in the genetic traits of living organisms over time. The theory is based upon the fact that living creatures adapt to their environment, which may result in changes to genes or whole genomes. These changes can, over generations lead to the creation of new species. The prevailing theory of evolution is known as natural selection, which describes the process that allows individuals with advantageous characteristics survive and reproduce more often than those with disadvantages. This differing reproduction may be a catalyst to the emergence and evolution of new species.
The word "evolution" is derived from Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in many different ways as the concept has developed in both science and elsewhere. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to evolve into a different species. Etienne Geoffroy St.Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist disciple who came up with the term "transmutation" to describe this view. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 challenged this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the notion that existing species change into different species in an orderly and predictable manner.
Recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living creatures develop characteristics that increase their chances of survival or the ability to reproduce offspring. As time passes this genetic variation can cause the emergence of completely new physical or biological traits in the same population. Natural selection is the mechanism that triggers the majority of evolutionary changes. However non-genetic changes like increases in the muscle mass as a result of diet or exercise can't be considered examples of evolution since they're not passed on to future generations.
Creationists make the argument that evolution is controversial despite the fact that it has been proven to be true by thousands of scientific tests and it has been tested over time. They argue that the concept should not be taught at school. In South Korea, creationists have had a few wins in their fight to remove evolution from high-school textbooks which includes the removal of any references to the evolutionary roots of humans as well as the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur thought to be an ancestor of birds.
Why is Evolution important to humanity?
Evolution explains the origins and evolution of Earth and all living species. It is also a foundation of biology that helps scientists understand how living organisms work and develop. Evolution also helps us understand the connections between different species. Scientists study evolution to better understand the natural world and also to make important discoveries including the development of new drugs.
The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that explains so much about the universe as well as life on Earth and has been rigorously tested and verified over many years. Many people, including religious leaders, are in favor of the scientific theory. It is important to remember that evolutionary biology does not interfere with religious beliefs since it only focuses on physical objects, events, and processes.
Many religious people have come up with a way of reconciling evolution with their beliefs. Certain Christians, for example, believe that God created everything through evolution and that humans have an ancestral connection to other animals.
It is essential that scientists and educators speak out for teaching evolution. In certain countries, anti-evolution sentiment has been rising. In the United States some states have taken measures to restrict teaching of evolution. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research is urging the elimination of textbook content on the evolution of horses as well as the bird ancestor Archaeopteryx.
It is vital to remember that the evidence in favor of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a broad variety of sources, including fossils, genetic studies and the behavior of living organisms. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.
The vast majority of scientists supports the theory of evolution. This support is based on various reasons. Scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries such as the development of new medicines and other treatments, while others use it to improve animal and plants species, typically to benefit humans. Some scientists are just curious, while others hold a a strong religious belief in God.
What is Creationism?
Creationists believe that God created all things in the universe. They also believe the Bible is God's word and should be interpreted in a literal manner. While Creationists may not all be Christian, many are. 에볼루션 룰렛 fall into one of two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).
The most well-known type of creationist is the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in the exact way described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the creation's six days is true, and that the universe and the life on Earth began only recently.
OECs are less well known, but they are just as passionate about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and Earth are billions-of-years old and that evolution is a lie.
Both types of creationism reject the scientific theories that biogenesis and natural selection could explain how life began on Earth. They claim that evolution is not possible because it would require an extraordinary event, and that the scientists who founded modern science eschewed miracles for fear of losing credibility.
Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and call their belief "theistic evolution." This is sometimes referred to as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the original species." The theory suggests that God creates the original species and allows them to evolve over time. Then these evolutionary changes will produce new species that are identical to the original species.
Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in one event called the Great Flood. They believe that all the original species were created at the same moment and then slowly evolved. They reject the concept of abiogenesis and assert that self-replicating living cannot come from non-living matter.
In general, creationists are against teaching evolution at schools. Numerous professional associations, such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education support this position, as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, some scientists and educational institutions are more flexible and permit the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curricula.
What is Creationism?
When people think about the concept of creationism, a lot think of the United States. However, South Korea is also the home of an anti-evolutionist movement. Publishers of high-school textbooks announced last week that they would remove the mention of evolution in their textbooks. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent organization that is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) has been the driving force behind this effort. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks examples of the evolution and ancestor of the bird, the Archeopteryx. The next goal is to take out excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch-research and also on human evolution.
STR claims to have the backing of 4,000 families and individual members. Its goal, it says, is to rid the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which paints an unflattering image for students. It also seeks to counter the influence of American Creationists across the country. A survey of students in biology revealed that a majority of them did not believe evolution. The causes are not certain, but could be related to religious beliefs or the lack of creation scientists in the US.
The KACR has achieved many things in the past through lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly journal called Creation and a book. One of these was an educational textbook on natural sciences that had a creationist perspective. It sparked interest in the college community. In 1991, a professor and minister began teaching Creation Science in one university, and it continues to be taught to this day.
On August 6-7 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR and its members have been delivering talks on creation science at major seminaries, too. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
